Support available

Services available for students with a Personal Learning Plan (PLP)

Once you have disclosed a disability to the Disability Service, they will create a Personal Learning Plan (PLP) for you. This document sets out recommendations for the support you may need during your time at Manchester Metropolitan.

We will automatically apply recommendations relating to the Library for you, so you don't have to do anything. You will be notified with details of these recommendations, and what you might need to do to access some of these services.

Dependent on what it says in your PLP, the Library can provide the following:

  • Book retrieval: we can retrieve books from the Library on your behalf. Email with a list of books 24 hours before you wish to collect them and we will retrieve them from the shelves for you.
  • Alternative formats: the Library can request for books to be made available in different formats, more suitable for screen readers and printing.
  • Carer, non-medical helpers, accompanied other: the Library can provide reference access to anyone who accompanies a person with an identified need on a regular basis.
  • Accessible study room: the Library has a bookable, dedicated study room for students with a prearranged identified need. This room contains range of specialist equipment and computer applications.

Help desk

You can speak to a member of the Library help desk about any of our services, resources or facilities. There is no need to make an appointment. Opening hours for the help desk are on the Library website.

Chat service

You can have a live chat with a member of library staff, and often get a problem solved immediately, or be referred on to someone who can help you. More information about the chat service is available on the Library website.

Online help

The Library has many short, easy to follow videos on YouTube and on the Library website, complete with subtitles and full transcripts.

One-to-one support

You can book an appointment with your subject librarian who will discuss and demonstrate how to use library resources and services, and can offer a personalised tour of the Library on request.
