Open Access

A guide to open access at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Applying for an APC

The University has created a fund to support the payment of an Article Processing Charge (APC) to make your research output immediately open access via the Gold route. The APC covers the cost of making your article open access. It does not cover general publishing costs such as overlength page charges or colour changes.

Before applying for APC funding, please check on our Funding for APCs page to see whether we have an agreement with the publisher of your journal to give you free or discounted APCs.

The APC fund is limited and you will need to justify using the Gold open access route by getting authorisation from your Faculty Head of RKE. Funding will only be available for outputs that represent outstanding original and rigorous research in high-quality journals or for excellent research that underpins significant economic and societal impacts. If you are unsure about this then you should discuss it with your Faculty Head of RKE in the first instance. Please note, your funder and/or publisher may require you to make your output Gold open access.

To apply for an APC:

1. Discuss publication options with your Faculty Head of RKE and/or Research Centre Head.

2. When support has been agreed, fill in the APC application form. The Library will process the payment.

3. The Library will seek formal confirmation from your Faculty Head of RKE.

Tracking APC costs

If you decide to pay for an APC using other Manchester Metropolitan University funds a SAP code for APCs has been set up which can be used with any cost centre: GL Code 751070 Article Processing Charges (APC)

Please use this code so that any APC payments can be tracked down and monitored through Manchester Metropolitan University’s finance systems.
