Newspapers can be a great source of information for all types of research.  From articles, reviews, opinion pieces, etc. they give an insight into both contemporary and historical events.

A quick way to find newspaper articles is to use Library Search.  Enter your keyword(s) and then under Format limit to Article.

If you are looking for a specific newspaper, you can check the Ejournals A-Z list to see if we have online access via one of our databases.

Lexis+

This is a legal database but it also provides access to full text newspapers from the UK.

Please note that images are not included.

  • Video Transcript

This video will demonstrate how to carry out a search for newspaper articles using the Lexis+ database.

Whilst Lexis+ is primarily a law database, it also includes full text articles from a range of UK national and regional newspapers including the Guardian and Observer.  From the homepage, click on Content and Newspapers.

For this video, we are going to be searching for newspaper articles about graduate employability. The default option is to search all UK news sources, but you can alternatively use the links shown on the screen to specify which newspapers you would like to search. In this example, I am going to search UK Broadsheets and click on Advanced Search.

On Lexis+, it is best to use the Advanced Search option to make your search more sophisticated. We can specify the date range of articles we wish to view. If you scroll down, we can use the terms fields to build our search using Boolean operators. By adding quotation marks around graduate employability, you will search for the term as a phrase rather than as individual words. We can narrow down our search by adding further keywords, such as UK. Click on the add button next to the terms field and the search string will automatically appear at the top of the screen. To run the search, click on the magnifying glass or press enter.

Our search has returned 28 results. By default, the search is sorted into relevance. If you prefer to arrange your results by document title or date of publication, use the drop-down menu. To narrow the search down further, you can use the tools on the left hand side of the screen where you have options to refine by subject, industry and more. From your results page, click on the title to view the full article.

The article will open in a new page. You have the option to print, email or download the article by clicking on the relevant icon in the top right hand side of the screen.
