Planning a search

Planning your search will save you an enormous amount of time in the long run.  
Here are our top tips for getting started.

who, what, when, where, how, why

  1. Write out your topic as a question or a statement.
  2. Pick out your concepts/keywords.
  3. Alternative and similar words: synonyms, variant spellings, acronyms, abbreviations, plurals.
  4. Organise what and where to search: mind maps?
    Spider diagrams? Lists? Sections?

The Library has a huge array of print and online resources available including books, theses, newspapers, journals, etc. Check out your subject guide to find out about material in your area.



General sources



SCONUL Access is a co-operative venture between most of the higher education libraries of the UK and Ireland. It enables staff, research students, full-time postgraduates and all part-time, distance learners and most placement students to borrow material from other libraries. It also allows full-time undergraduates students reference access.

Services available

All except undergraduate students may borrow 4 four week loan items. One week loan, one day loans, videos and DVDs cannot be borrowed.

Undergraduate access is reference only, ie you may not borrow anything.

We are unable to offer access to computing facilities, printing or the majority of electronic information resources.

Photocopying facilities are available upon the purchase of a copy card. Please note that photocopying is subject to copyright legislation.

What to bring with you

  • An email from your home library confirming that you are eligible for the scheme
  • Your university/library ID card
