Open access

A guide to open access at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU).

How to apply for funding to pay Article Processing Charges (APCs)

The University has created a fund to support the payment of Article Processing Charges (APCs) to make your research output immediately Open Access via the Gold route.  Before applying to the fund please discuss publication options with your Research Centre Head and/or Associate Dean (Research).

Once it has been agreed to support the payment of an APC, please contact the Library to process the payment. There is an online form to complete (link below), after which the Library will seek formal confirmation from your Research Centre Head and/or Associate Dean (Research).

The Library may have access to APC discounts, which are not available to individuals. The agreements that are currently in place include:

  • American Chemical Society (ACS) - $1,000 reduction, with further reductions for individual ACS members
  • BMJ journals - the library will pay the full APC
  • De Gruyter Open (under the JISC Collections Scheme 2015-2017) – 20% discount
  • IEEE – discounted APCs available
  • Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) – based on our RSC subscription, vouchers waiving APCs on papers accepted for publication during the current calendar year
  • Springer Open Choice - no additional payment for APCs as covered by our Springer journal subscription

To apply for funds to pay for an APC please complete an APC application form

If you have any questions about APC payments or would like further information please contact the Library Acquisitions team at: apc@mmu.ac.uk

If you decide to pay for an APC using other MMU funds a SAP code for APCs has been set up which can be used with any cost centre: GL Code 751070 Article Processing Charges (APC).  Please use this code so that any APC payments can be tracked down and monitored through MMU’s finance systems.
