As a researcher, making your work open access can help make sure:
There are two ways to make your research Open Access: Gold OA, which usually involves the payment of an article processing charge (APC) to the publisher, and Green, which involves depositing your research output into an institutional repository (IR) such as e-space.
Gold OA means the full-text of the final published output (publisher's PDF) is immediately available from the publishers' website and can be deposited in e-space.
If you would like to access funds to publish via the Gold route please see the page 'Apply for an APC payment'
Green OA involves depositing a pre-publication version into the IR, e-space. This may be immediately available or it may be subject to an embargo set by the publisher, which can vary but is typically between 6 and 24 months. Funders such as RCUK and Hefce have imposed limits on these, the details of which can be found in their policies and mandates.
